History of Can Opener
A Can Opener is a device which is used to open metal cans. The cans were invented in the early 19th century for storing food for British Navy. The can was made up of solid iron and it usually weighed more than the food they held.
The Can Opener was invented by a man named Ezra Warner about 50 years later. Before that people had come up with various creative ways to open the cans such as use of sharp knives,or a hammer or chisel.
The modern can opener with a cutting wheel that rolls around the rim was invented by William Lyman of United States in 1870. The only modification from the original patent was the introduction of serrated rotation wheel by the Star can Company of San Francisco in 1925.
The classic wheel design is not the only kind of can opener, another that is very common is P-38 pocket can opener, which is used in army and often given out with food aid in the developing world.
This type of can opener is very cheap as it contain very less metal, consisting only of a metal blade with a hook. It can be used much faster than a normal can opener. Also it is very easier to carry and store.
