Safety - Can Openers - DO's and Dont's

Being a part of important kitchen tools, less concern is shown about the can opener safety and safe use. Here we chalk out some Do’s and Don’ts to safely maneuver a handy can opener.

Do’s:

  • ◊ Either you use a manually operated can opener or an automated can opener, keep a check on the cutting blade and the compression parts.

  • ◊ A high-quality cutting blade ensures smooth edges around the can and open top.

  • ◊ Use can openers with magnetic lid lifters or lid pliers so that the lid doesn’t fall into the can once opened.

  • ◊If the can opener is a manual one ensure the position of the hand knobs and the cushion for comfortable handling.

  • ◊ Always keep your automated/electronic can opener dust free so that the food never comes in contact with the contamination and the equipment works fine.

  • ◊ Keep a regular check on the cutting blades so that they are always in the optimum working conditions so that your equipment never gets damaged due to rough cutting blades.

  • ◊Ensure regular cleaning/servicing of your can opener, according to the user manual of the product, for durability of the equipment and hygiene of your kitchen.

  • ◊ Always check for safety features and quality certifications, if any, in the product guide.

Don’ts:

  • ◊ Don’t use the can openers which leave jagged edges once the can is open. These edges might result in cuts to hand if not carefully handled.

  • ◊ If the lid falls into the can once opened use lid pliers instead of hand so as to avoid contamination to food.

  • ◊ Although can openers are easy to operate don’t allow small children or infirm persons to use it without your supervision.

  • ◊ Don’t allow the grease, which in some cases tends to settle on the cutting mechanism over a period of time. This can also contaminate the food coming in its contact.

  • ◊ If you are using electronic can openers, do not open them by yourself if some problem occurs. Instead take it to the authorized service station of the company.

  • ◊ For cleaning switch off the equipment and remove the plug from the power outlet. To unplug, hold the plug and remove it from the socket. To avoid damage to your can opener never unplug it by pulling its cord or carry it by the cord.
